Bill Bell Opens Campaign HQ in Heritage Square
Bill Bell, seeking his fourth term as Mayor, officially opened his campaign headquarters today in the heart of the Hayti District at the Heritage Square Shopping Complex, 401 Lakewood Avenue.
The Heritage Square/Rolling Hills community is one of the areas set for major redevelopment and serves as a perfect landscape to reinforce the Mayor's priority to bring economic and business development to inner city communities. The area is a thriving racially mixed community of black, white, and Hispanic residents that is representative of Durham's diversity and economic development potential.
Mayor Bell opened the office at a press conference Wednesday afternoon, surrounded by volunteers, citizens, and key supporters.
"The location reflects the constituents I serve and is easily accessible", said Bell, "and I am happy to have a presence here. I firmly believe that the partnership with Scientific Properties to build a mixed-used development will expand the spirit of entrepreneurship and small business development that exist here today—and offer even greater opportunities for minority businesses to thrive and participate.
With the Mayor's full and active schedule — the presence of the campaign office in Heritage Square will provide a central location to handle the large volume of campaign volunteers. The office also provides a setting for the citizens of Durham to meet with Mayor Bell and campaign staff, and to take an active roll in the final weeks of the campaign.
Standing inside his new campaign headquarters, Mayor Bell smiles as he talked about being Mayor and why he wanted to serve the citizens of Durham for two more years. He said it wasn't enough to have been a major stakeholder and change agent in the political arena for over 30 years, or to have lead with a steady calm during times of crisis, or to have served as a catalyst that brought people together to build a greater Durham. He said it wasn't enough that crime was down and businesses were flourishing, or that home ownership opportunities and the revitalization of blighted communities had increased. " Much has been accomplished," Mayor Bell said, "but there is more work to be done to assure that all citizens are part of the vision and benefit from all Durham has to offer."

Welcome!
I consider it an honor to have been given the privilege to be mayor of this city. We've made Durham a safer place for our children, a more fruitful place for business, and a wonderful, creative, diverse home for families. I want to continue that work.
