Enhance Transit in Durham and the Region

Public transit is critical to the growth of Durham, region and state. As Mayor, I will continue to make public transportation a priority. With the successful transition of the management of the Durham Area Transit Authority to the Triangle we have fully achieved improved service and management.

In 2012, I will continue to dedicate my commitment to improving our public transit network by working with key stakeholders in engaging in the following objectives:

  • Conduct a thorough review of bus services to ensure that routes are serving areas most in need of service, and that the service is being provided as effectively and efficiently as possible.
  • Examine routes, ridership, service needs and hours and feasibility for free ridership;
  • Partner with the Durham Convention and Visitors Bureau to enhance marketing of the transportation service
  • Expand use of intelligent technologies advanced with “real-time schedule apps” providing information so that riders can determine the precise arrival time of a bus.
  • Support of a public referendum in support of a regional transit system that would include an expanded bus service and a rail system linking major Triangle cities.
  • Seek regional cooperation to address the issue of funding public transit to increase community, mobility, access and connectivity.

In addition, I will work with the City and NCDOT to plan and address the street and resurfacing needs of our City to include:

  • Repaving of more than 150 miles of streets, thanks to last year’s bond referendum.
  • Continuing to partner with the NCDOT to resurface major intersections in Durham, including the downtown loop to Markham Ave.
  • Safety and mobility improvements at railroad crossings throughout the city.
